Junior School
Curriculum in the Junior School is based on the Queensland Studies Authority Years 1-10 Syllabuses. There are nine Key Learning Areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, Technology, Health and Physical Education, the Arts, Languages other than English (German) and Christian Studies.
Our aim is to place emphasis on the development of literacy and numeracy in the early years and to develop units of work that integrate outcomes from various Key Learning Areas. In this way the students are well grounded for further studies and set on the path to becoming lifelong learners. The Queensland syllabuses are outcomes based, an outcome being a description of what students should know and what they can do with what they know. Staff meet under the direction of a Curriculum Leader to plan the teaching and learning program so that it addresses the stated outcomes. Progress and the standard achieved in the curriculum areas are communicated to parents through a formal written report twice a year.
Students at Immanuel experience a broad range of curriculum offerings including: Food Glorious Food, Weird and Wacky Weather, Toys for Us, The Great Outdoors, Young Scientists, Ticket to the World, Fit 4 Life, Wirrangga-together, Animal Antics, Skin Deep and Earth and Beyond. They have many opportunities to engage in different sporting, cultural and interest activities. We are especially proud of the fact that students can enjoy their learning in a supportive Christian environment where they will also appreciate and participate in the spiritual dimension that is too often lacking from 21st Century curricula.
Secondary School
Years 7, 8 & 9
Learning outcomes are based on The Queensland Studies Authority Years 1-10 Syllabuses. There are nine Key Learning Areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, Technology, Health and Physical Education, the Arts, Languages other than English (German, Japanese) and Christian Studies.
Our aim is to immerse students in a curriculum that is relevant to their world and takes account of the special social, physical and intellectual developmental requirements of young adolescents. At the same time we believe that students should experience a seamless transition from primary schooling to secondary schooling. During the Secondary years students move from having a small number of core year 7, 8 & 9 schooling teachers to experiencing a full range of subject teachers. They also have access to specialist learning areas such as science laboratories, computer laboratories, kitchens, music rooms and workshops from Year 7.
The Queensland syllabuses are outcomes based. An outcome being a description of what students should know and what they can do with what they know. Staff teams meet under the direction of Curriculum Leaders to plan the teaching and learning program so that it addresses the stated outcomes. Progress and achievement are communicated to parents in terms of Lifelong Learning Attributes appropriate to the Key Learning Area. These include:
- Active Investigation
- Complex and Creative Thinking
- Communication
- Knowledge and Understanding
- Planning and Performing Practical Tasks
- Reflection or Reflective Participation
Students in the Secondary School at Immanuel experience an enormous range of curriculum offerings. These include:
Christian Studies, English, Maths, Science, Health and Physical Education, SOSE, German or Japanese, Technology and Design, Graphics, Home Economics, Business Studies, Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, Music, Media and Sport.
Emphasis is placed upon the development of literacy and numeracy in a wide range of contexts. Technology is used in a variety of ways to support the learning of our students in the above curriculum offerings. Our students have many opportunities to engage in different sporting, cultural and interest activities. We are especially proud of the fact that students can enjoy their learning in a supportive Christian environment where they will also appreciate and participate in the spiritual dimension that is too often lacking from 21st Century curricula.
Year 10
In Year 10 students complete studies based on the Queensland Studies Authority Years 1-10 Syllabuses. They also spend four weeks at our Mt Binga campus, a well-equipped outdoor education centre. Semester 2 of Year 10 is regarded as a time of preparation for senior studies and an opportunity for students to sample subjects they may wish to study in Years 11 and 12. Here are some examples of how this is achieved:
- In Mathematics, students are placed in groups to prepare them for Maths A or Maths B.
- In Science all Year 10s complete units in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In second semester, students select two elective units so that they may begin to experience some of the expectations of Senior Physics, Chemistry, Marine Studies or Biology.
- In SOSE all Year 10s complete an introduction to five social sciences on a rotational basis and then students select one of the units: Ancient Times in Modern Film (Ancient History), CSI (Contemporary & Social Issues), Bulls & Bears in the Share Market (Economics), GIS (Geography Information Systems - Geography), Constructions of the Australian Identity (Modern History) and Law and Order - the real story (Legal Studies) for an intensive, specialist study during Term 4.
The College offers a great deal of support to students as they make their senior choices with presentations on subjects, parent evenings and individual guidance and counselling interviews.
An exciting new direction in our Secondary School has been the development of alternative pathways to employment or further studies for students for whom a program of academic subjects is not the best approach. The College offers courses in English Communication and Prevocational Mathematics as well as others with embedded vocational components. Immanuel is a trial school for the new Education and Training Reforms for the Future initiatives and offers a range of options with regard to courses, traineeships and apprenticeships.
Year 11 and 12
The College offers a full range of courses in Queensland Studies Authority senior subjects and Authority Registered courses. These are shown on our Senior School Subject Offerings page. There are also many opportunities for students to be extended through Headstart university enrolment, performance, excursions, subject workshops, Interact and other clubs, field trips, camps, leadership and devotional retreats. We are especially proud of the fact that students can enjoy their learning in a supportive Christian environment where they will also appreciate and participate in the spiritual dimension that is too often lacking from 21st Century curricula.
